Today's Fashion Affirmation

I am suited for excellence.

I understand the critical role that my image plays in my professional and personal relationships.  I take pride in my appearance and want to appear well groomed and polished at all times. My daily dressing “to do” list includes cleaning and pressing my clothes, and shining my shoes.  Each evening I plan what I will wear the next day, and lay out all my clothes and accessories. This habit helps to ease my morning ritual so that I start the day feeling calm and ready to make a winning impression on everyone I encounter throughout the day. My practice is rooted in the belief that a pleasing appearance represents personal power. By making an effort to look my best, I send a strong message that I am confident, capable and strive for excellence in all areas of my life.

Four fabulous 2011 jewelry trends

All eyes are on jewelry this fall as this ultimate accessory shares center stage with the latest clothing fashions.  Jewelry animates the wearer and delights the beholder. It also possesses the power to instantaneously transform a somber outfit into a sensational one.  Holobi  DRES System has created jewelry and accessory guidelines for each of the four body types and face shapes: diamond, emerald, sapphire and ruby. The team of Holobi independent stylist consultants will train individuals how to incorporate fabulous fall jewelry trends like the following into their wardrobe:
·       Feather’s Unfurled:  Exotic plumes in the form of cascading earrings, choker necklaces and brooches are certain to add “glam” to jeans as well as a LBD.  A feathered pin strategically placed on a lapel or at the waist draws attention to those areas.  Feathers appeal to dramatic dressers who enjoy making a statement with their clothes and accessories as well as Ethnic style personalities who favor a bohemian look.
·        Pendant Power: This 1970’s iconic necklace has morphed into a thoroughly modern style.  Pendants come in all sizes and shapes this season. Designs include delicate filigree leaves, bejeweled Byzantine crosses and glass and bead pendants. Ethnic fashion styles will take to pendants made of natural elements like stone, bone and wood. Antique brass and semi precious stone pendants, on the other hand, inspire the romantics at heart.  Sapphire body types, whose hips are larger than their bust and shoulders, look smashing in bold “statement” pendants that rest at mid chest and highlight the décolleté.  Ruby body types, the opposite of sapphires, can sport longer pendant necklaces, provided that they are small busted. Rubies have broader shoulders and/or a larger bust compared to their narrower hips and thighs.
·       Metal Magic: Brass, silver, hematite and antique gold standout as this season’s most sought after metals. A single strand silver or gold necklace projects timeless elegance for those who prefer a conservative sheath dress or tailored suiting. The multi strand mixed metal designs infuse a pair of jeans and a simple tee-shirt with an edgy vibe, especially those with twisted strands and interwoven beading.  What better way to showcase mixed metals than by wearing an eclectic assortment of bangles or a turquoise cocktail ring set in gold and silver. Assorted stacked bracelets and rings work well on ruby body types because they extend the hip line and showcase the legs. The beauty of mixed metals is that they complement both warm and cool skin tones.
·        Welcome Back Chokers:  One just might find a long forgotten choker somewhere in the recesses of a jewelry armoire. This season’s hot style runs the gamut from woven designs with feathers and beads to sleek hammered silver minimalist collars. Chokers bring attention to the face, hair and eyes. They also suit petite women better than many of the popular oversized chunky necklaces. Since chokers rest at the base of the neck, they coexist nicely with a variety of tops including those with shawl collars, turtlenecks, peplum jackets with notched collars and oxford style blouses.
Frank Sinatra once crooned about “baubles, bangles (and), bright shiny beads” and their power to delight. This season’s array of jewelry options offers women the opportunity to take their personal style to new heights and add extra brilliance to their image.  As the song goes, “sparkles, spangles, your heart will sing….wearin’ baubles, bangles and beads”.

Fashion's Night Out is a global style happening

On September 8, cities everywhere will partake of festivities to mark Fashion’s Night Out, and Belk department store leads the effort to bring this worldwide phenomenon to Greenville.  In 2009, Vogue Magazine, the Council of Fashion designers of America, NYC & Company and the City of New York joined forces to create an event that would simultaneously showcase fashion and help grow the economy. This collaboration resulted in an event called Fashion’s Night Out that now has become the style party of the year.  As the press release states, Belk will host Fashion’s Night Out with southern grace and hospitality in twenty five stores. One can expect a sampling of culinary delights along with a full menu of fashion, the real treat of the evening.  Guests will glimpse the following three prominent fashion trends as coined by Arlene Goldstein, Vice President of Trend Merchandising and Fashion Direction: classic charm, smart cuts and high country. At the event, shoppers can purchase on trend fall essentials and accessories that will breathe new life into last year’s wardrobe.
As a way of saying thanks for shopping, Belk has a memorable gift for everyone who spends $75 or more on merchandise during the evening. The gift of a personalized monogrammed silver compact salutes individual style and promotes Belk’s seasonal theme of “Hello Beautiful”. Shoppers may also register to win airfare and hotel accommodations for two to the world renowned Clarins spa in New York City, home of Fashion’s Night Out.
On September 8, usher in Fashion's Night Out at Haywood Mall from 5:00 - 8:30, and enjoy a night full of exciting style surprises. For more information, go to http://fashionsnightout.com or follow the event on Facebook and Twitter(@fnonyc,#FNO).

Fall 2011 Fashion Trends

Cooler morning temperatures here in Greenville, South Carolina signal autumn’s rapid approach.  At this same time each summer, fashion thoughts naturally turn from sundresses to sweaters.  The large crowds at Haywood Mall in recent days suggest that folks have already begun their quest for new fall attire. The experts, who keep their fingers on the pulse of fashion, identify the following as top fall trends:
1.    1960’s sensibilities: The new limited edition “Mad Men” line for men and women at Haywood Mall’s Banana Republic store exemplifies a return to the elegance and sartorial skill that epitomized this decade. According to the store’s Customer Experience Manager, Robert Izquierdo, the buzz word for menswear this fall is narrow. Tapered suit jackets combined with thinner lapels create an overall streamlined effect. This minimizing trend continues in suit pants without pleats that fit slimmer through the thighs and legs. Vests and thinner ties further contour the torso. The store presents a visual feast of women’s fashions from sheath dresses to suiting with feminine flourishes, and chiffon blouses in soft lavender and mauve. Cardigans and jackets that graze the hips, as well as princess style dresses in autumnal prints, both showcase and slenderize the waist. The Hoss Intropia line at SavVy boutique on Augusta Street, also embodies characteristics of 1960’s designs, such as demure dresses in rich fabrics. The metallic fitted cocktail dress with a window pane cutout at the neckline and a dainty bow accent stands out as the collection’s show stopper. The only accessory needed with this stellar frock is a martini in a frosted glass. In keeping with the spirit of the 60’s, SavVy sells a matching bolero jacket that can be worn with the dress or by itself.
2.    Flashbacks from the 1970’s: Suzanne Guymon, Dillard’s Fashion Communication Director, sees a resurgence of the quintessential styles of the 1970’s, such as high waist, flared legged pants and jumpsuits. Another born again signature look from this decade is the bow neck blouse that finishes any suit or pencil skirt. Bohemian chic, a consistent influence in the past several years, comes on even stronger this fall in the form of maxi skirts, fringed vests and multi colored peasant blouses paired with wide cinch belts. Now Boho fans can rev up their look by purchasing Joe’s Visionarie flare leg jean with a long fringed Matty M tunic vest at Dillard’s online.
3.    The sporting life: Classic American sportswear symbolizes simplicity, comfort and a casual lifestyle. Arlene Goldstein, Belk’s Vice President of Trend Merchandising and Fashion Direction, describes this fall phenomenon as “high country”. Distinctive features of this trend include traditional plaids and checks, stripped sweaters, utility jackets, lush wool sweaters, and tweeds. The iconic designs of Ralph Lauren represent American sportswear at its best, and Belk is one of the local retailers that carry his collection.  The Blanca crewneck logo tee in autumn red looks striking underneath the Audey Shawl collar camel sweater vest with a distinctive hardware closure. Both pieces are available at Belk online.
Cable knit cardigans for men and women exemplify the classic casual trend.  Augusta Twenty’s blog “a propos” features an open front shawl collar long cardigan in oatmeal by Vince as a pick of the week, and includes it as a fall “must have”. This multi-purpose sweater not only oozes sophistication, but it is an ideal coat substitute in Greenville’s moderate climate.
This fall’s exciting array of clothing options offers something for just about every style personality.

How to Dress for a Job Interview

In today’s economy, individuals need more than a strong resume to land a job. Employers consider a number of critical factors when making hiring decisions, and appearance is one of them. Both business professionals and style experts offered the following tips on how to dress to impress any interviewer:
·      Do your research: Individuals should determine an industry’s standard for attire and then dress accordingly. It pays to ask questions; observe what employees are wearing, and read as much as possible on appropriate workplace attire.
·      Stick to the b.e.s.t. (basic-elegant-simple-tailored):  A candidate’s performance and not their appearance should take center stage Expressing one’s individuality through clothing, while encouraged, should never be done at the cost of appearing unprofessional, says Rachel Yeomans of The Working Wardrobe.com.  Avoid bold prints, loud ties, strong perfume, oversized and excessive jewelry, and too much makeup. Generally, experts recommend wearing well fitting, tailored clothing in colors like tan, grey, black and navy. Investing in good shoes is a must. An attractive watch and a sleek briefcase or proper handbag help to achieve a polished look from head to toe.  The beauty of a classic look is that one can can modernize and add personal flair to it by adding a few tasteful accents, such as a subtle print silk blouse, scarf or understated jewelry.
·     Suit up for success: Dress in formal business attire unless you receive instructions otherwise. This means a suit or trousers and a sport jacket with a tie, for men.  Men should wear oxford or loafer style shoes with dark socks. Acceptable formal business attire for women includes knee length or longer dresses, tailored suits (pants or skirt) or coordinating separates with closed toe shoes of medium heel height.
·     Groom yourself for a position:  Results of a national survey showed that the status of a candidate’s grooming makes a huge impression on an employer. Carefully pressed clothing and shined shoes score big with recruiters, as does nicely styled hair, white teeth and manicured nails.
·     Don’t be a saboteur: Many corporate cultures prohibit certain style trends such as tattoos, multiple ear and facial piercings, and revealing clothing because they believe that these practices are not aligned with the image that they wish to project. So, if you show up with uncovered tattoos, you may be immediately eliminated from consideration for a position.
·     A pleasing appearance projects power: A person’s appearance provides others with a snapshot of their self image. An impeccable presence displays self confidence, attention to detail and readiness to assume professional responsibilities. What is your image saying about you?

A positive image projects personal power.

Today's Fashion Affirmation

I stand tall in my clothes.

I strive to maintain good posture because I understand that the way in which I carry myself affects my health and well being. When I stand up straight, I am perfectly aligned from my head to my toes. My spine is supported, there is less stress on my joints and muscles, and my internal organs have enough room to perform optimally. Like a highly efficient machine, I move gracefully and effortlessly.
When I keep my head up, pull my shoulders back and open my chest, I command a strong presence in the world. My straight carriage changes everything about my appearance. I stand out, look proud and appear more confident. I am stylish and stately in my clothes, which fit as if they were custom made. People often compliment me on my appearance.
I know that good posture is a habit. When I find myself slouching and shrinking, I know that I can reverse this tendency through awareness and practice. When I pass by a mirror or see my reflection anywhere, I check out my posture and immediately make the corrections that are needed. I also regularly do a quick body scan, especially when I am sitting or standing for long periods of time. If I’m slumping, I focus on what that feels like, and I also experience the reverse sensation of filling out my frame.  The difference is unmistakable. Every day I choose to stand tall for my spine, my health and myself!

Do's and don'ts of casual business attire

Business casual is now the most widely accepted corporate attire in the United States, and companies in Greenville are following this national trend. Although it appears that there is no standard definition of the term “business casual”, employers develop their policies for this for this dress practice based on the following general guidelines
  • Men:  slacks, short or long sleeve collared shirts or sweaters, closed toe non-athletic footwear and socks.
  • Women: knee length or longer dresses, skirts, full or Capri length pants, tops and blouses with or without collars, sweaters, and closed or open toed shoes.
Often companies allow their employees to “dress down” on certain days. Employees of the North American corporate headquarters of Michelin tires in Greenville may wear jeans on Fridays. The Greenville offices of Hubbell Lighting permit their employees to wear jeans a few times a month, usually before holidays or in conjunction with a charitable fundraising or food drive. Steve Nail, Vice President of Human Resources,  pointed out that jeans and specially designed tee-shirts are also worn at events celebrating the achievements of individual departments.
Business casual is not synonymous with informal or casual attire. Certain clothing and accessories are always off limits in a business casual environment.  Leisure, athletic clothing, club wear and beach attire are prohibited, and so are clothes that show too much skin or undergarments.    Hubbell Lighting and other companies also prohibit clothing and accessories that display inflammatory or profane language, designs or photos.
Business casual by no means sacrifices seriousness of purpose for comfort. Janet Wade, Michelin’s Director of Corporate Personnel, emphasizes that ones work clothing should reflect a single purpose:  doing business. Image awareness professional and owner of “DotThati”, Tamra Silvestre, stresses the “need to maintain a professional image that is a positive reflection” on one’s company.  Alicia Abrahams, Community Manager at Verandas at the Point apartment residences on Carolina Point Parkway, strongly believes that a professional appearance from “head to toe” also sends the message that employees take pride in their work and value the customers they serve. In Ms. Abrahams’opinion, the gold standard for business includes being neat, well groomed and polished.
Although all employees need to become well versed in their organizations’ dress code, from time to time they may have questions about the appropriateness of certain clothing. Jason Loftis, Corporate Recruiting Manager at Michelin, offers this essential piece of advice to employees and job candidates alike: always seek clarification from a supervisor on matters relevant to professional attire.

Today's Fashion Affirmation

I accessorize artfully and thoughtfully.
Opportunities to express your individuality and creativity present themselves every day.  You could invent a new recipe, transform a room by adding touches of color to it, or write in your journal. Fashion provides another vehicle for self expression. When you wake up each morning, you can decide not only how you want to look, but what image and mood you hope to capture. Do you wish to project a powerful presence for an upcoming business presentation? Are you going for a chic and sophisticated appearance for your vacation to Italy? Dressing with intention and looking your best requires that you have the proper clothing essentials to suit your personality and lifestyle. Next, you need a host of accessories. Like icing on a cake, accessories are what help you to stand out and look finished. In addition, they are the personal touches that reveal your authentic style. If you have a bohemian streak, you can wear a head scarf and multiple bangle bracelets. On the other hand, a double strand pearl chocker may be exactly the right jewelry choice for your classic and traditional tastes.
Would you like to learn how to “take your outfits from ordinary to extraordinary”, and also gain the confidence to create a polished look from head to toe? The expert DRES stylists at Holobi are eager to assist you with all your accessory styling and personal wardrobe needs. Find a stylist near you by visiting  http://www.holobi.com/.  I am also a regional director for Holobi, and one of their independent Holobi consultants. Today's Fashion Affirmation

"I have made my peace with bathing suits".

The very thought of going bathing suit shopping, let alone wearing a swimsuit in public, sends most women into a tailspin. Under those department store florescent lights, with next to nothing on, all of our imperfections are glaringly obvious. When faced with this situation, the impulse might be to put our clothes back on, flee the dressing room, and resign ourselves to wearing the same chlorine ridden swimsuit for another season. On the other hand, we could stay and face our demons.
So, if you are less than thrilled about wearing a bathing suit on your next beach vacation, then perhaps you will find comfort in being reminded of this: all of us have imperfect bodies, imperfect personalities and imperfect lives. Mare Petras, fitness expert, author and inspirational speaker, cautions us about the pitfalls of pursuing perfection in her book, "The 7 Habits of Highly Successful Swimsuit Shoppers". A strong proponent of mind-body fitness, Petras advocates striving for balance, "vibrancy, and vitality" rather than perfection. Removing the pressure to be perfect is a critical step towards self acceptance.
We can also make friends with our bodies by developing healthy lifestyle habits such as exercising, eating nutritious food, and managing stress levels. Living in our bodies is a lot like living in our houses. They both require constant upkeep in order for us to fully enjoy residing in them. Unlike home maintenance however, the stakes are much higher if we fail to take proper care of ourselves, and we don't have the option of moving from our bodies. As a veteran of the fitness industry for thirty years, Mare Petras has her own formula for sustaining a healthy lifestyle. Her motto is "K.I.S.S." or "keep it simple, sweetie". All three of her Fitness Simply books are full of common sense techniques, meant to inspire and energize you on the inside and out.
The next time you put on your bathing suit, take some deep breaths, and then call to mind the things you like about your body. Also, do one extra health enhancing thing each day. Eat a handful of blueberries, take a brisk walk after dinner, or just sit quietly with your eyes closed for five minutes. Remember to also practice this month's affirmation.

The Bikini Goes Beyond Basic This Summer

For more than fifty decades, the bikini has been an enduring swimwear fashion force. Variations of this ever present style appear each season, and they are often inspired by what is current at the time in women’s wear designs.  No doubt you will spot most of these bikini trends at the pool during the dog days of summer:
  1. Mixing It Up: The fact that tops and bottoms are often sold separately opens up the door for creatively blending bikini styles, colors and patterns. The combinations are endless, and include such pairings as polka dots and solids, crochets and florals, and string bikini bottoms with bandeau tops. By buying several separates, women can expand their swimsuit wardrobe by simply interchanging tops and bottoms.
  2. Prints, stripes and color blocking:  Nautical stripes, exotic animal prints and florals are lighting up beaches everywhere. At Old Navy, bikini bottoms and tops come in daring black and yellow geometric designs, leopard prints, and soft blue floral prints. It's Anchors Aweigh this season with the strong emergence of nautical striped suits. Target has an exciting array of them in colors such as mint, coral and magenta. The Xhilaration Juniors Mix and Match Reversible suit comes in eye catching forest green and pink stripe, and is trimmed in trendy polka dots. Those who purchase solid color bikini separates can experiment with color blocking, the practice of combining swathes of at least two complimentary or contrasting hues. With color blocking, even the most unlikely combinations coexist well, like purple and chartreuse or orange and fuchsia. Both Old Navy and Target sell solid pieces suited for color blocking.
  3. Adornments and hardware: Romantic ruffles, seen on dresses and tops this summer, have made their way onto bikinis. Victoria Secret sells a delicate floral ruffled bandeau top with a removable halter strap and a ruffled bottom that is right on trend. Bandeau tops now come decorated with daisy and rhinestone accents. Metal or plastic rings, strategicallly placed on the hips and in the center of a triangle cut bikini top, continue to be a strong trend, as are mock ties, jewel embellished halter straps and buckles. Now you can wear your heart on your hips instead of your sleeve with Victoria Secret's "Heart Ring" bikini. Macy's also carries many suits with these contemporary flourishes.
Who is responsible for the bikini's staying power? Historian Olivier Saillard credits "the power of women and not the power of fashion" for this phenomenon.

The Wondrous One Piece Bathing Suit

Debra Kerr wore a one piece in her legendary love scene with Burt Lancaster in “From Here to Eternity.” The vision of Bo Derek running along the beach in her flesh colored tank suit and braided cornrows in “10”, gave new meaning to the word “sexy”. One piece suits are forever fashionable because they exude sophistication, flatter any figure, and are as comfortable as second skin. Before you do swimwear shopping for your beach vacation, consider checking out these one-piece styles:
1.      Maillot: This classic tank normally has a scoop neck, and thin shoulder straps. Exciting new maillot trends include halter necks with front key hole cutouts or ruffled bodices. The Talbots' swimwear 2011 collection features these styles in paisleys and stripes as well as bold solids.  The surplice maillot style is also popular because its faux wrap design and pronounced v neck both slenderizes and compliments the torso. If you want a maillot with a little more drama, shop PacSun for tanks with plunging necklines or side cut-outs that present the illusion of wearing a bikini.
Maillot leg styles vary from a traditional trunk to a high cut look. The maillot also comes in a boy short length that resembles a cropped bike short or a track unitard. Lands’ End also carries the ‘Tugless Tank” that is designed not to ride up in back. Swimmers who need suits that are designed for comfort, performance and durability, can find them at Lands’ End.  Made of highly chlorine resistant fabric, these suits will keep their shape after countless pool workouts.

2.      Strapless: This summer’s favorite is also known as the bandeau style, and is built for sunbathing.  J Crew is featuring some retro inspired bandeau standouts this season. The entire front of the Jersey Lomelina Ruffle Tank is replete with layered horizontal ruffles, and the Ruched Banded Bandeau Tank both contours the torso and supports the bust line with its built in seaming details. J Crew also carries a blouson style bandeau suit with an extra chemise type overlay that ends in a gathered band at the hips. This style camouflages the midsection and is an ideal maternity swimsuit.

3.      Swim Dress: Now you can swim in the surf and then walk the boardwalk without having to put on a cover-up. the swim dress is a one piece mini with trunks underneath. Lands' End calls it the "Grecian Swimdress", and Talbots' version is the "Skirted" one piece. this style, which hits at the beginning of the thigh, is not only slimming, but it also suits those who want maximum coverage.

If you haven’t blown your budget on your one –of –a –kind one piece, then head to a Sunglass Hut to buy your updated wayfarer Aviators or a pair of Dolce Gabana wrap shades. With the addition of this glamorous accessory, your beach photo will no doubt be “simply mahvelous”.

Sensational Style on Cinco de Mayo

I am here in my second home in Greenville, South Carolina, enjoying the many pleasures of the "upcountry". As a fashion trends and style writer for the Greenville Examiner.com, I covered a wonderful event last week called "Muy  Caliente". Yes, it was held on Cinco de Mayo, and its purpose was to raise funds for the Carolina Ballet Theatre (CBT).

As a newcomer to Greenville, I'm just beginning to learn about the extraordinary work of the CBT. Even though it is an internationally recognized company, CBT is strongly rooted in the Greenville community. Its mission is to enrich and empower the lives of others through dance. The company does much to make dance accessible to children and families who would not otherwise have this exposure. In keeping with their commitment to education, CBT partners with area teachers to develop specialized curricula and dance programs to inspire new generations of dancers and dance enthusiasts.

Attending this event gave me a prime opportunity to view the latest cocktail dress trends here in Greenville. Upon walking into the ballroom of the Pointsett Club,  I was struck with the fact that the room was awash with color. Fuchsia definitely outshone all other colors, however. It was everywhere, in solid as well as fuchsia print dresses. Color runners up were aqua, orange, and pink. Those who opted for the LBD wore bold accessories. Strapless and one shouldered designs reigned. Satin, chiffon and jersey fabrics were well represented. as were ruffles, pleats and applique embellishments.

Refusing to take a back seat to the ladies, gentlemen spiced up their neutral trousers with daring touches like lavender ties, and jewel toned shirts. The fedora, a quintessential menswear accessory, made a jaunty appearance both on and offstage.

It was the sum of all styles, together with the entertainment and participation in a shared cause, that made this truly a resplendent evening.

Today's Fashion Affirmation

I love who I am on the inside and out.

I accept my physical imperfections and am happy with my body as it is. I don't compare myself to others, nor do I go to extraordinary lengths to look like the women I see in the media. I don't think that I would be happier if I was just taller, thinner, prettier or younger. I like the extraordinary person I am. I strive for excellence, not perfection. I seek opportunities to know myself better, and develop my talents and abilities. I understand that life is about living wholeheartedly.

This week's affirmation focuses on self acceptance. The theme of acknowledging your strengths and weaknesses resonates in the words of Hugh Prather who said: "Unless I accept my faults I will most certainly doubt my virtues".

From this point on, I will post a new affirmation on the first Monday of each month, rather than on a weekly basis. Throughout these past nine weeks, I have thought much about the relationship between our bodies and ourselves, and the importance of paying attention to all of who we are. My hope is that you have enjoyed reading my affirmations, and that they have sparked an interest in learning more about how they foster positive change. Perhaps you have even made some of them your own. When framed properly and repeated often, they do work. Here is a list of the affirmations from previous weeks:
  • When I shop for clothes, my figure and not fashion rules.
  • When I look into the mirror, I see my finest attributes.
  • I enjoy receiving compliments about how I look.
  • When I walk into a room full of people, I feel confident and stylish.
  • I wear clothes that fit me.
  • I am a mindful shopper.
  • I strive to look my best every day.

Today's Fashion Affirmation

I enjoy expressing my personality through my clothes.

Like eyes, clothes are "windows to the soul". How a person puts an outfit together, the colors they choose, and their signature style are clues to a puzzle about who they are on the inside. The fact that you rarely see two people dressed alike, speaks to the fact that fashion informs us of one's uniqueness. Even though fashion trends can be frivolous, fashion as a means of self expression is not.

This week, in addition to reciting your affirmation, think about what you want  your clothes to say about you. Be guided by both your style goals and personality when choosing your outfit each day.

A Glimpse of Greenville's Fashion Trends

Two years ago, while on a flight from Washington, DC to Charleston, SC, I picked up a copy of the airline's magazine and read all about the revitalization of Greenville and its many attractions. The timing of this occurence was serendipitous since I had already begun to entertain the notion of spending a good portion of time in to a smaller, warmer and more tranquil city. After doing additional research, I placed Greenville at the top of my relocation wish list.

Fast forward to the present and I am now a Greenville resident. Last week I celebrated this milestone by heading downtown to see the Carolina Ballet Theatre perform Giselle at the Peace Center. I walked Main Street before the performance and found an outdoor cafe where I could conduct my daily fashion field work, otherwise known as people watching. From what I gleaned in the span of several weeks from this practice, I came up with the following top Greenville spring and summer fashion trends:

1. Greenville is big on bold.
Folks have bid adieu to winter grays, blacks and browns and are saying “yes” to color in a big way. From my ring side seat on Main Street, I saw prom goers in their sunflower yellow and fuchsia gowns, and observed that women about town are accenting their neutral outfits with orange handbags, aqua jewelry and metallic shoes.

2. Stripes are above board.
The nautical look is strong for both men and women. I saw striped t-shirts and polo shirts, long striped cardigans, and of course, seersucker separates. The outdated “no white before Memorial day” rule has definitely gone by the wayside here. White slacks and jeans are everywhere. Nevertheless, the pairing of striped tops with dark wash denim is still a popular choice.  Women are also revving up the classic nautical style by adding a bright solid colored scarf or statement necklace to the mix.

3. Romance is in the air.
Perhaps influenced by the powerful love story of Giselle, ballet goers wore soft floral patterned dresses, long flowing skirts, and romantic style ruffled blouses.  The new “mid length” dress length trend (between 3 to 4 inches above the ankle) also seems to have caught on here.  Picture a blend of mid 20th century style and a ballet costume.  In fact, one of Greenville’s trendiest stores, Augusta 20 (http://www.augusta20.com), features a charming green patterned vintage inspired sundress in this length on their blog "a propos". As this blog points out, one of the advantages of the mid length versus the maxi is that you can still showcase all of your terrific sandals, wedges or flats.

4. Dresses reign on Main.
Dresses are a must have in Greenville and I predict that their popularity will increase as temperatures soar. It seems that women throughout town have embraced a multitude of dress styles including classic sheaths, maxis, minis and even some 1960’s style shifts.

Today's Fashion Affirmation

I strive to look my best every day.

Making a commitment to present your best image to the world requires time, effort and money. An investment in your appearance is an investment in yourself, and the rewards are significant. When you present a polished image, people will respond to you accordingly, and you will command more respect. Most importantly, you will enjoy increased self confidence and an improved outlook. Dressing with intention helps you live with full intention.

This week, take extra time each evening to decide what you will wear the next day.  Make sure that the clothes you intend to wear are clean and pressed, and your shoes are shined. Lay out your entire outfit, including accessories and outerwear.   Repeat your affirmation each morning while you are dressing.

Today's Fashion Affirmation

I am a mindful shopper.

First and foremost, shopping requires a positive attitude, time, and patience. Rushing out at the last minute to buy something in a hurry is almost always a recipe for disaster.  Another common shopping pitfall is expecting that you will find what you are looking for right away.  Mindfulness is as essential to shopping as it is to any of life's tasks. By slowing down, removing expectations and staying in the moment, you will be  more likely to complete your shopping without the stress and fatigue often associated with this process.  Hopefully, you will enjoy yourself as well!

Repeat your affirmation before and during each shopping outing this week. I'd like your feedback on how your practice is going.

Today's Fashion Affirmation

I wear clothes that fit me.

Do you wear baggy clothes that conceal your figure or are you pouring yourself into outfits that used to fit when you were thinner? Stop! Wearing clothing that is either too large or small makes you look heavier than you are. Before you leave the house each day this week, look at yourself in the mirror (preferably full length), and pay attention to how your clothes fit on your frame. If you come to the conclusion that your clothes are ill fitting, then it's time to do some shopping.  Practicing this week's fashion affirmation will help reinforce your decision to dress for your shape.

Wardrobe Essentials: The Experts Weigh In

Now is the time to refresh your wardrobe and shop for new spring and summer clothes. Before you head to the stores, I recommend that you conduct a wardrobe audit. That's a fancy name for looking in your closet and preparing a list of what you have and what you need. All too often, women end up with a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear. A major reason for this closet conundrum has to do with a failure to build a wardrobe from the ground floor up by investing in core pieces. Think of your wardrobe core as the structural foundation that supports your house. If the structure isn't sound, you will encounter stress and endless expense to right this fundamental problem.

Do you need help in deciding what your wardrobe essentials should be? Well, let's see what the three great minds of style put on their lists of top ten clothing basics:

Today's Fashion Affirmation

When I walk into a room full of people, I feel confident and stylish.

Take a little extra time this week to reflect on your personal strengths and style assets. Write a list of these qualities and put your strengths in one column and your style assets in another. Post the list somewhere visible and read it daily, along with your affirmation. When you step into the spotlight, stand tall, make eye contact and  allow your personality to shine through.

Today's Fashion Affirmation

I enjoy receiving compliments about how I look.

Do you feel uncomfortable when someone says you look attractive? Well, you aren't alone. Many women shy away from being the center of attention and downplay a compliment by giving a self deprecating response. This week, practice your affirmation and also graciously say "thank you" when you receive a complimemt.

A Man of Substance and Style

My dad passed away on September 4, 2010. Today would have been his 91st birthday. I think about him every day, and he is often the inspiration for my style musings. So, it seems right that I should dedicate today's posting to him.

In the aftermath of my father's death, one of the hardest tasks for my sister and me was going through his clothes. Looking good was important to him and he loved dressing up every day. He had impeccable style and a knack for creating charming outfits. A lover of fine things, he naturally gravitated to high price tag items, like Bally loafers and Brooks Brother's suits.  Dad rejoiced when Saks Fifth Avenue opened its doors in the city where he lived. Of course, he became a familiar face there and made fast friends with all the sales associates. Each time I visited him, it wouldn't take my dad long to ask this all important question: "Would you like to go shopping?". How could I turn down that invitation? He was as talented as any professional personal shopper and bought me splendid items over the years that matched my style sensibilities. I always gave him credit when people complimented me on one of his purchases. Invariably the reaction from others was the same..."You mean your dad picked that out for you?".

Dad expressed his exuberance, spontaneity, and joie de vivre through his clothes. He wore purples and pinks and paired polka dots with paisleys. Ever since I can remember, he wore certain signature accessories that definitely made him stand out in our hometown of South Bend, Indiana.  These pieces included a beret that he wore all winter long and a variety of striped wool scarves resembling those worn by British school boys. Always confident in his skin, he never seemed to care that his style was slightly out of step with what other men his age were wearing in  the 1960s.

Beneath the oxford shirts and silk ties, there was an extraordinarily brilliant man of courage and character. He received a doctorate in civil engineering from MIT and spent fifty years in higher education both as a professor and administrator. During his career, he received many awards and honors, and he mentored countless students. A distinguished veteran of World War II, my father served his country heroically as a lieutenant with the US Army Corps of Engineers. He was also the recipient of seven bronze stars and a bronze arrowhead.

After my Dad retired (in his mid eighties), he still got dressed "to the nines" several times a week and headed to the Veteran's Hospital where he volunteered. He definitely lived the philosophy that dressing your best helps you be your best. So, in honor of him today, I followed his example. Yes, I overdressed for working at home, going to the health club, running errands and hanging out with my grandson. That didn't matter a bit because I felt good. If that wasn't enough of a reward, I also received compliments about my outfit from my stepson and a clerk at the grocery store checkout line.  Upon hearing these nice comments, I smiled and almost found myself saying,"my dad picked this out".

Green Handbags Gone Glam

In 2003 Laura Jennekens underwent chemotherapy for breast cancer. She braided her cut off locks and attached them to a bandana which she wore until her new head of hair grew back. Out of this deeply personal experience, the seeds were sown for another recycling idea which took root when Laura met a talented seamstress named Vicky Gerke.  Together, these creative minds came upon the idea to take fabrics destined for landfills and design them into eco-conscious handbags, totes, diaper bags and laptop cases. They started Echoes in the Attic in 2005 and since then their Canadian born business has flourished. Echoes routinely rescues 500 pounds of landfill bound donated fabric scraps and samples every two weeks. The company’s products are sold in 100 independently owned eco-minded shops and boutiques in Canada. They also use professional home sewers, affectionately called “mompreneurs” and receive fabric donations from a host of manufacturers, such as Ethan Allen Furniture.

Each of Echoes in the Attic’s products is a unique gem. Their bags range from the “Tee Bag” made of recycled t-shirts, blouses, scarves and linen to the one of a kind “Purse-nickety Hipster” bag and the “Liberation Laptop Carrier”.  Echoes also sells an array of artful pillows. Laura, Vicky and their entire team are committed to the cause of “saving the planet one handbag at a time”. They also really love what they do.

Laura and Vicky’s motto is “Be an Advocate for responsible consumption…reap what we sew”.  You can find out more about Echoes and purchase their products by going to their website: http://www.echoesintheattic.com or their Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/EchoesFan.
